Coloured Security Watermarks developed by Sir William Congreve, 1818
Left - Sir William Congreve's coloured watermark of 1818 in red, blue, yellow and white, made for him by John Portal at Laverstoke Mill, Hampshire, in trials for the Bank of England.
Right - A more complex Congreve trial sheet incorporating a normal wiremark as well as colour. The edges of the sheet are white and the backgroud is red, made from Adrianople Cloth.
