International Association of Paper Historians
The IPH integrates professionals of different branches and all friends of paper within the
field of paper history. It coordinates all interests and activities in paper history as an
international specialist association co-operating with international, regional and local
organisations not only of paper historians but also of keepers of archives and libraries,
conservators, art historians, specialists in books, printing and technology, associations
of the paper industry, the publishing trade etc., including handicraft and artistic
activities in connection with paper.

Paper Industry Trade
Association
The Paper Industry Technical Association (PITA) is
an independent, professionally managed organisation and produces the journal Paper
Technology. It provides a forum for the exchange of information and
technology to the benefit of its members in the pulp, paper, converting and
allied trades. Whilst under the management of a dedicated professional team, the
Association's activities are directed by volunteers from all areas of the
industry.

A Short
History of Paper Boats
Over a hundred years ago a prosperous industry emerged in Troy, New York in the
manufacture of rowing boats and canoes from paper. These ranged from simple
single-person rowing shells to a 45 foot "pleasure barge" that could
seat seventeen in addition to its six oarsmen.

Sapphire Project
The SAPPHIRE project has created a valuable sound
archive and database of material on social, economic and cultural aspects of the
twentieth century Scottish print and publishing industry from people who are or
have been involved within that industry during their working lives. Part of this
is a new initiative looking into the oral and social history of papermaking
on the Water of Leith.
Recently published book - Papermaking
on the Water of Leith - examines the papermaking industry on the Water of
Leith during the twentieth century, from before the second World War through to
the closure of the last mill in the 1989.

Paper Identification
Database
The
Paper Identification Database is created for collecting data for historic paper
characterisation and identification and evidence of historic paper making and
paper mills. Not only data from water marks, but also details of laid and chain
lines characteristic of hand made rag paper are documented. Size, colour and
acidity measurements, fiber morphology and pulp type as well as paper sizing and
other components in paper have their places in the database.
